Tri-County Health Department approves face-covering mandate that includes Aurora

On Wednesday, July 8, the Board of Directors for Tri-County Health Department approved a face-covering mandate in the three-county area that includes Aurora.

This mandate applies to all individuals while in public indoor spaces, as well as in outdoor spaces where social distancing of at least 6 feet is not possible. There is currently not an effective date for the policy as it is being drafted by Tri-County Health Department. Colorado may not yet be seeing the big spikes in COVID-19 cases that have been occurring elsewhere in the country, but numbers are trending upward, and residents can follow best practices—social distance, use a face covering and frequently wash their hands or use hand sanitizer—so we can continue on a path of economic recovery. Local municipalities can opt out of this mandate.

Oil and Gas regulations virtual public meeting July 16

The city is updating the Aurora Municipal Code with regulations and Best Management Practices related to oil and gas. Join the first of two virtual town hall meetings 6 p.m. July 16 to ask questions about the draft regulations. Review draft online.

City Council discusses scope of independent investigation into Elijah McClain case

Prompted by the members of the city's Public Safety, Courts and Civil Service Policy Committee—Council Members Allison Hiltz, Curtis Gardner and Angela Lawson—the city manager is working with the mayor and members of the Aurora City Council to initiate a new independent, external investigation of the actions of our police, firefighters and paramedics in the Elijah McClain case.

Mayor Mike Coffman called for a discussion of the Aurora City Council on July 6 on the investigation, where council expressed its support for the anticipated scope of the investigation. The council will further discuss the investigation and who will conduct it at the Public Safety, Courts and Civil Service Policy Committee meeting on July 16, and at the City Council meeting July 20.

The external investigation is expected to include a team of experts who will thoroughly examine the actions of Aurora police, firefighters and paramedics in the case, with both local and national input from people with backgrounds including civil rights, the criminal justice system and emergency medical assistance. The report will evaluate all actions against applicable laws, best practices, national policing and emergency response standards, making any recommendations they deem fit.

“It is imperative that the city moves forward quickly and urgently with this investigation to provide answers to the community,” said Mayor Coffman. “Together we all want to achieve meaningful improvements, eliminate racial inequity and make lives better in our community. This review–and ultimately its findings—is a critical step toward these goals.”

In partnership with Aurora Interfaith Community Services, the city of Aurora has distributed more than 150,000 meals this summer as part of the Aurora Mobile Food Pantry. Photo ID or proof of Aurora residency is required. All Aurora households are eligible. Food for pets is also available, as well as emergency food kits for those experiencing homelessness. Virtual STEAM-Powered History Camp

Draft Oil and Gas Regulations Virtual Town Hall
Thursday, July 16, 6 to 8 p.m.
The city of Aurora is updating the Aurora Municipal Code with regulations and Best Management Practices related to oil and gas. All oil and gas regulations will be contained in a new document titled "Oil & Gas Manual." The Aurora Municipal Code will be updated to refer to the Oil & Gas Manual for regulations pertaining to oil and gas. Two virtual town hall meetings will take place for the public to ask questions about the draft regulations. Little Foxes Summer Theatre Program
July 20 to 31, 9 a.m. to noon
The Aurora Fox Arts Center is reopening its doors with the children's theater program, limited to 16 students, for a two-week theatrical experience like nothing the Little Foxes have ever done before. "Odyssey 3000!" will be a little bit “Twilight Zone,” a little bit “Megamind,” and a whole lot of fun when our young artists create an entirely original show based on a futuristic theme!
